Ink Eats & Drinks (Midtown Sacramento): Brunch Edition
food: 3.5/5
experience: 4.5/5
overall: 4/5
The theme of Ink, as you may have guessed, is Ink. Tattoo art a la Ed Hardy lines the ceilings, walls, and no, not the floors. But everywhere else. It's a bunch of red and black with skulls and flowers and half-naked ladies. A bar dedicated to getting inked. They also serve (okay) food.
If you're just getting into the brunch scene in midtown/downtown Sac, this is a decent place to start. They've got a lot of breakfast standards, a few unique dishes, but most importantly they are neither loud nor crowded. For a bar it's not bad at all in any respect. They have the sports TVs on if you're into the sports shows. Or you can enjoy the day and sit outside.
French toast: 4.5/5
The real reason this is good is because they use that Hawaiian sweet bread we all know and love. It'd be basic if not for that but this makes it just the right amount of sweet. Make sure to get some fruit in with every bite - it makes it taste even better. They served me strawberries initially which I'm allergic to, so I asked them to be replaced with blueberries and these complemented the dish well.
Breakfast tacos: 4/5
Decent. They gave me corn instead of flour tortillas sigh. The interior is just scrambled eggs with a bit of chorizo in there. It just tastes like spiced eggs pretty much. Plus avocado, cilantro, and cotija cheese. Pretty good.
Potatoes: 3/5
For a side, this is still pretty meh. It is what it is. Fried potato quarters. No spice detected. Needs salt.
Sourdough toast: 5/5
I know this technically doesn't deserve a rating because it's just toast and it's not like they make it, but they put just the right amount of butter on it, not too much, just enough to taste. And the bread itself is good. I'm usually not a fan of sourdough but this is good stuff.
Chicken & biscuits: 3.5/5
Sigh. Sad times when fried chicken disappoints. The batter is nice and crispy but the flavor just isn't there. They get a 3.5/5. As for the biscuits, those only get a 3/5. They're crisp on the outside but at the same time the whole thing is very chewy and not flaky at all. There's a bit too much of a cheddar flavor and not enough of a flour-y biscuit flavor. They're moist inside which is good I guess. The eggs need salt. The best part is actually the sausage gravy (on the side) which tastes like sausage clam chowder.
Breakfast burrito: 3.5/5
Flavor-wise this is a solid 4/5, but I have to take off points because literally half of it was bulked up with breakfast potatoes. I took all of them out to see and was left a limp burrito and a pile of potatoes. Plus the breakfast potatoes that came on the side, got damn. That was easily two or three whole potatoes on one plate. Comes with bacon, eggs, and veggies, where you can find them.
In general the service is good. The first time here I ordered a couple things after showing them my allergy list and they still messed up each dish I ordered. So we got a 25% discount on our bill which ended up being about six bucks. Not bad. At least they did something to correct their mistake. Don't expect bars to do specialty orders I guess.
