Simply Salad (Los Angeles)

food: 5/5
experience: 4/5
overall: 4.5/5

Simply Salad is a small chain in Los Angeles with five locations. They specialize in - you guessed it - salads.

You can build your own salad and they also have pre-made salads. They're about eight bucks for five base toppings, plus more if you get any fancy toppings or protein items on them which I suggest you do because it's all really fresh and tasty. I got mine with seared ahi.

Comes with a (nasty) thin slice of pita bread.

You can also get your salad in wrap form with a wheat tortilla.

These huge salad bowls will definitely tide you over for a few hours. Be sure to check your bowl to see if you got everything. They forgot one of my "premium" ingredients (costs extra) but they corrected the mistake. They chop the salad extra fine so toward the end you might find yourself in need of a spoon.

There's a small selection of soups to choose from. I would have loved to try that delicious-sounding coconut curry chicken but somewhere in there is soy according to their allergen menu. Tragic. They also have shrimp chowder which is different, in addition to the standard clam chowder. Other classics like broccoli cheddar and chicken tortilla soup. Nothing too interesting.

If you're feeling munchy, they have their own huge packaged cookies for sale at the counter. I got all five flavors. For science.

The vegan gluten-free banana walnut I tried first. I wasn't expecting much given these restrictions but damn this one is better than banana nut bread. It breaks apart though because there's nothing really holding it together. It's bomb though. The chocolate chip walnut is a solid chocolate chip, not much to say about it. It's big and chewy. The apricot-cranberry-pineapple is also vegan and gluten-free so I was kinda prepping for the worst with that one too but also not because the previous one was so good. It's a very fruity, oaty, and healthy tasting cookie. This actually might be my favorite one. And not because it's healthy (because it's not, though it is the lowest calorie one), but because the flavor profile is so unique. The peanut butter cookie is one of the best I've ever had though so I dunno. That one's up there too. And the chocolate espresso is the perfect blend of chocolate and coffee, with a hearty oatmeal flavor and big chocolate chunks. You really can't go wrong with any of their cookies.

Simply Salad has an allergy station if you tell them you have food allergies, but I would be very careful when coming here if you do because a lot of times ingredients end up in different bins than they're supposed to so you'll get a kernel of corn or a slice of almond here and there. Not too bad but if you're severely allergic to something it's a definite no-go.
