Midtown Sushi (Midtown Sacramento)
food: 5/5
experience: 4.5/5
overall: 5/5
Lou's (now "Midtown Sushi") was recommended to me by fellow friend of the blog David O. after I voiced my complaints about never having had outstanding sushi. Lou's, it was said, is five-star sushi. And who am I to not take food recommendations? So I went on my merry way to sushi on this occasion in hopes of some excellent grubs.
The place is small and packed, especially on a Friday night. They all greeted us as we walked in which was nice. We opted for take-out. If you want a good Lou's (Midtown) experience don't get take-out. We were pretty much ignored the whole twenty minutes it took to make our two rolls. They didn't even start on them until fifteen minutes after we ordered. But they happily gave us the bill as soon as we ordered. We watched as some customers who were seated after we ordered got their sushi ahead of ours. Argh.
The sushi though? Yea, 'tis five-star sushi. We got the Princess and the Mount Fuji.
The Princess is a typical roll. Good. They don't make it anymore (nor the Mount Fuji) but they made them especially for us. But this Fuji. It's a behemoth.
When they said Panko crumbs on top I thought they meant a sprinkling. A dusting, if you will. This is literally a mountain of Panko crumbs. And on top of that mountain they put even more sauce - specifically, a sweet mayo and a ponzu. This roll is definitely five-star worthy. The other one is meh.
One last thing, these rolls are filling. Like I've never been full from sushi before. It's sushi. But after 1.5 of these two rolls of Lou's I couldn't even eat the small salad I prepared. No ragrets.
Obviously I came back for more soosh, but this time they went by the name Midtown Sushi, namesake Lou having relocated to Southpaw Sushi in Del Paso. Their selection wasn't as visually impressive or extensive as before. I only tried a couple.
Daniel My Brother is an interesting roll. It has mint leaves and asparagus. It tastes pretty fresh and healthy. It's a light roll. I like sea bass so I got it.
And the 6-Item is pretty damn good actually. It features jalapeƱos, shrimp, salmon, and lemon. The lemon complements both fish really well. A very satisfying roll.
They have an item called secret shrimp that looks really good. Shrimp covered in panko with creamy garlic sauce on top. They said the sauce had something in it I'm allergic to but here's what it looks like just for advertising purposes.
Plus some specialized sashimi plates like the spicy tuna sashimi.
Happy hours are every day from 3-6pm and all day Sundays and Tuesdays! We happened to come on a Sunday to find that out so I took advantage and dug in.
They have barbecue salmon and barbecue albacore. Most places have BBQ albacore so I wanted to go with something different.
What's to say? It's salmon and it's barbecued. It's good stuff. They put some spices on mine since I couldn't have the sauce and I put lemon juice on it. It's a pretty small dish for the price though so I would only recommend it during happy hour.
They also have a few rolls. I got the Billy "the Kid" roll, which has spicy seafood salad and cream cheese in it. Mmmm.
Delicious. All that needs to be said. Definitely worth the price as well. Okay two things to be said. Whatever.
Their sashimi platter is pretty damn good. I don't know what the one on the bottom left is, next to the scallops, but whatever it is it's good shit. It tastes grilled. Maybe it's sea bream or something. I saw that on the menu.
Service can be realllly slow here because it's so popular like, all the time basically. We didn't get all our food on time and one time it took an hour to finally get and eat everything, one because they served me something I was allergic to and two because we added something else after that happened. They were kind enough to take the first thing off the bill though which was coo. And another time we came I couldn't have any sauces because they all had soy sauce (even the spicy mayo) so they gave us a little discount. Score for the service. Oh yeah and there's a really cute guy who works here so he was nice to look at too. Only thing is they're a little expensive but consider the neighborhood.
