Sarom's Southern Kitchen (North Sacramento): All-Day Breakfast Edition

food: 4/5
experience: 3.5/5
overall: 4/5

In Sacramento you have basically four options for Southern food. There's South, the Porch, Fixins (reviews to come), and Sarom's which has been here the longest. They have two locations, in North Sac (the main one) and Elk Grove. The North Sac one is kinda ghetto but it's the flagship so we went there our first time.

The wait there is long, especially on a weekend and especially on a Sunday. People like to linger. One table lingered inconsiderately for at least a half hour after they were finished before they left. It was clear a big line was piling up at the door but that's the type of crowd you're competing with here I suppose. Our dishes were served about ten minutes apart from each other so we were already off to a pretty bad start. Anyway, we got pancakes and French toast the first time we came.

French toast: 3.5/5
It's a solid French toast, nothing special. You could probably make just as good French toast at home. Thick cut, moist, flavorful, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Buttermilk pancake combo: 4/5
These pancakes are big and fluffy and delish. I give them a 4.5 by themselves. They have a nice buttery flavor and definitely taste like buttermilk. The sausage that comes with just tastes like regular old sausage, and the eggs are not very good. They were also cold. So that wasn't cool.

The following times we went to the Elk Grove location hoping for a better experience.

Chicken & waffles: 4.5/5
A solid chicken & waffle combo we got here. The chicken is salted and spiced perfectly, though I would prefer a crispier batter. And the waffle tastes different, I don't know how to explain it. Maybe they used corn oil in it. It's good though. It's on the sweeter side than most waffles I've had. My only complaints are that both waffle and chicken were a little tough. Pro-tip: order regular chicken & waffles instead of the hot & spicy version and put hot sauce on top because there's literally six different hot sauces on the table to choose from and it'll save you two bucks. I went with the Louisiana brand, which is a little salty, and Frank's Red Hot, which is a classic and has garlic in it.

See? Plenty of hot sauce to choose from. Even sriracha. Score.

Biscuit: 4.5/5
A little biscuit but it packs a punch. This definitely tastes like authentic Southern right here. A great flour-y, doughy flavor with just the right amount of butter in it. Soft, warm, fluffy, perfection. I was gonna get the gravy on top but honestly that would overpower the flavor and you want to taste this.

Grilled cheese supreme: 2.5/5
I would not call this a grilled cheese by any means. There is barely any cheddar in here. It is however packed with one thick-ass slab of honey-baked ham which (albeit good on its own) seemed very out of place in here, along with bacon, avocado and tomato. This sandwich can't really decide what it wants to be and I don't want to decide either so this one's a no from me. If you want a grilled cheese for breakfast I recommend straight up asking for a grilled cheese and adding bacon. It'd be a lot better than this mishmash. The sourdough bread is pretty dry.

Potatoes: 4.5/5
Surprisingly good given their slight lack of seasoning. Crispy, thick wedges. Not much else to say.

If you're lucky they'll give you a sample of their awesome sweet potato pie at the end. It doesn't look good in the case but trust, this is everything you want in a sweet potato pie. It's good shit.

Highly recommend going to the smaller Elk Grove location. The service is more amicable, it's less crowded, the parking doesn't suck, and it's just better overall. They have a system similar to South where you order at the counter then wait to be seated. Another reason I wouldn't go to the North Sac location: at least when I went, the bathroom was disgusting. The guy who went in previously left a big mess of piss everywhere and it was just thoroughly gross. Again this is the type of crowd you can expect for this area. It's also the more popular location (somehow) so you'll be waiting longer.
