Pluto's (NorCal)

food: 4/5
experience: 4/5
overall: 4/5

Pluto's is another create-your-own-salad chain in NorCal that bears striking resemblance to Jack's in both format and menu, though they're more based in the Bay Area. It's another favorite of mine, mostly due to convenience. Their menu items all have super-cool stellar names because that totally makes them taste better. My go-to here, of course, is the create-your-own salad.

Their toppings selection is abundant and they have stuff for everyone, including vegetarians and vegans. I usually make my salads vegan just to save some calories and money. Some locations have butternut squash which is my absolute favorite salad topping, but it's rare to find. Of course they have the pre-made salads as well but that's no fun. Unlike Jack's, you get a free slice of focaccia with your salad.

Yet like Jack's, they also have some sandwiches in their repertoire, and yes, you can customize those too. I've tried the focaccia pesto - sorry, "Mozzarella Moon."

It's decent. Their focaccia is nothing to rave about, it's pretty basic with some rosemary in it. I like their wheat bread better, weirdly enough. They don't go too hard on the pesto and they've got the fresh basil in there. One caveat: their sandwiches are like nine bucks! It's just a sandwich. Come on.

Their Crispy Buffalo Sky is basically like a burger, with fried chicken, buffalo and ranch sauce. Not the healthiest but definitely the tastiest sando they have. It's bomb to be honest. The chicken is fresh and moist and the breading is delicious. The sauce isn't too spicy but it tastes like buffalo cheese-y ranch basically. And they don't lay it on too heavy.

I got a side of fries and had no idea a side meant a whole plate. For four bucks I got this:

Curly fries are always bomb and they put garlic on them. Fresh garlic. Even better. Garlic breath for me. I like the ringlet curly fries the best. Fries with only a slight wave can go screw themselves.

Speaking of sides, they've got similar sides to Jack's as well: mashed taters, mac n' cheese, onion rings, and the aforementioned fries including those of the sweet potato ilk.

All of them are fine, whatever. Skip the onion rings though. Their mac is better than Jack's. Not much different you can do with potatoes other than fry them in a different oil or add different herbs or something. Sweet potato fries are always good anyhow. Their fries are thicker cut though which I do like a little better just because they're squishier. The sauce that comes with the sweet potatoes is prime.

You can get plates of meat if you want. Turkey, beef, chicken, shrimp... and for some reason they include portobello as a meat. Hey, you do you, vegetarians, but keep your portobellos to yourselves. That shit's nas-tay.

They've got a little dessert case with brownies, massive rice krispie cake slices (seriously) and equally massive cookies. Now, if you've had one rice krispie treat you've had them all, so I went for (almost literally) every other dessert in their case.

Here we have the chocolate brownie, the toffee triple chocolate cookie, and the peanut butter cookie. The brownie is aight. It's got chocolate chips in it which makes it better but it's not as dense as I'd like and the flavor's kinda out of a box. The peanut butter and chocolate cookies, though, are delicious, and will surely satisfy lovers of both varieties. Personally, I'm partial to the chocolate because the cookie base is actually really good, but they're both great in their own ways. No, they're not the freshest, but they're still pretty good.
