Zocalo (Midtown Sacramento): Brunch Edition

food: 5/5
experience: 5/5
overall: 5/5

Zocalo is a Mexican restaurant in midtown. Most people don't know this, but they have brunch! Score. I had to check it out.

Since it's not a major brunch hot-spot, there's no wait time. We were seated immediately and given the customary chips, salsa, and black bean dip. All good.

You know I'm a carb lover so I had to try their French toast as soon as I saw it on the menu.

Good news: it comes in half orders! The waiter gave us a full order even though we said we were splitting a half. He still gave us the half price. Hurrah for good service!

For a Mexican place these guys can make some mad decent French toast. Moist, thick sliced bread that's not too heavy, topped with almonds, berries, sweet cream, and crunchy granola. Don't pour syrup on it - you'll ruin its delicate sweetness.

I didn't want to leave their brunch forever without trying at least one other thing, so I opted for their brunch bōl.

It's a perfectly portioned serving for one. We've got several things going on in here. We got crispy bacon on top. Potatoes, black beans, pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream. Oh, yeah, and the eggs smothered in spicy, salty chipotle sauce. The potatoes could've used some seasoning but this was a hearty dish and the sauce was excellent.

Being a Mexican venue, most of their brunch items revolve around eggs. So I had to try a couple of those dishes. First, the chorizo con huevos.

Follow this blog long enough and you might start to notice I like my chorizo and sausage. Bacon is second-tier breakfast meat. It's basic. Chorizo and sausage take some talent to make correctly. You just fry bacon. Long story short this is nice and spicy and meaty. Tastes like classic Mexican meat. They blend the meat in well with the eggs so it's not just chunks of chorizo on top of the huevos. And it's got the sauce and spices mixed throughout. You got your black beans and cilantro rice on the side and this is enough to feed a couple people easy. They also throw in some flour tortillas which are delicious in themselves.

Oh but of course I had to try my latest obsession, the breakfast burrito, before I left.

Bomb as well, and you know I got chorizo in there too. It's got their cilantro rice, pinto beans, sour cream, cheese, and of course the chorizo, plus another yummy flour tortilla. Topped with more sour cream and savory chipotle sauce. All kinds of good. Nice and filling, too, less importantly.

Zocalo outdoes themselves with brunch. Though not typically seen as a brunch venue in Sac, they can definitely compete with the best of the brunch crowd and as you can see, basically every dish here is a big win. Their brunch is, dare I say it, better than their actual lunch and dinner menu.
