California Livin' Series: The Walking Dead Tours (Atlanta)

Another edition of California Livin'! For reference, here are parts one, two, and three.

This time we're going all the way across America to Atlanta, where the hit series The Walking Dead is filmed on location. Zombies bro, zombies!!!!

The first stop on the tour is the town of "Woodbury," which is actually called Senoia, but they have some shops dedicated to the namesake. It's a little mountain town that's comparable to Oldtown Folsom, California.

Note: the coffee at Walking Dead Cafe sucks. I think it's closed now actually. RIP. The soap store was closed when I went so no comment on that. They also have a Woodbury Museum downstairs to peruse after the tour. And now... the tour.

This is "the wall" hiding the community of Alexandria. These are real houses in here, and I think they constructed them just for the show (wow). But no one lives in them. Well, there are four residents in the whole community but basically no one.

The tracks which Glen, Maggie et al walked on, outside Alexandria. RIP Glen.

The tracks where Denise died. I hated Denise so I was totally cool with this. She got an arrow to the eye. RIP Denise.

This is the parking lot from the first few episodes of the show where Rick and Shane battled the zombie horde. RIP Shane.

Another shot of the lot where the brawl over Laurie occurs on the schoolbus. Laurie had to have been the most boring character. Yet here they were fighting over her. Meh. RIP Laurie.

Just some abandoned buildings. I believe this might be where the pharmacy was in the first season.

Morgan rode up this hill on his horse. Poor dude lost his son and wife to zombie-ism. RIP Morgan's sanity.

Remember when that dude hanged himself and turned into a zombie? That was this tower.

Here's where the food bank was.

Something exciting in this location happened in season 8. I never did pay attention to what/when it was. Put your answer in the comments if you know!

The gas station where Jesus robbed Rick.

If you remember, this is the warehouse where they held the hospital workers hostage. Grady Memorial Hospital, where Beth was held captive. RIP Beth.

I can't remember what episode this is from, but it's a schoolhouse featured in the show. Let me know what it is in the comments!

Here's where the garbage pale kids lived. The "dump." That was a weird crew. I guess shit gets weird when you live at the city dump.

Another suicide-turned-zombie. Here is where the zombie was hanging off the bridge.

Behind this truck is the dumpster where Glen almost died, and the other dude did die. RIP other dude.

And here is where Enid met Glen at the dumpster. Dumps seem to be a theme in this show. It is a wasteland, after all.

Carol's house after she left the community. A little background on this house: the producers got rid of all the furniture because they wanted their own. So guess what they did. They replaced it all with exact replicas. Very wise decisions were made here.

The railroad that leads to Terminus. This tour I went on in 2017 so it only covered up to season 8.

A lot of people in Atlanta, as you may have guessed, are extras for the show. One of the high-tier extras (she's featured in full make-up) was the host of one of the tours. She talked about what it's like as an extra and how they do all that make-up. There are four "tiers" of zombies: the ones up front where you see their faces clearly, the ones behind them where you can kinda make out their faces, the ones that are in the back and like filler, and then the ones you get in that huge canyon in season 8 (I think?) that are just a horde of ants.

The second tour I went on just covered the first few seasons.

Here's where Glen got captured in the first episode of the show. I still think that's one of the best episodes but I'm alone in that opinion, it seems.

This was on the tour too but it's in a scene from the Hunger Games. One of the last ones in the series. Let me know if you figure this one out in the comments too.

Rick's house from season one.

This is the sheriff's office featured in the creepy opening credits. I also think TWD has one of the best opening themes I've seen on TV.

Morgan's house from season one, where his son died and his zombie wife walked up to his door. RIP Morgan's whole family.

One of the very first scenes in the series where Rick stumbles out of the abandoned hospital and finds all the bodies laying on the ground.

The famous "Rick on the horse" scene of the show's first episode. Not featured in the show: my fingertip. Whoops. At least I got the moody lighting right.

The warehouse known as Terminus.

Another location from the first episode. This is where Rick got trapped inside the tank and the poor horsie got eaten to death by zombehz. RIP horsie.

Carol and Rick almost fell over the bridge in the van here, looking for the hospital where Beth was being kept.

Where Rick comes to town.

Glenn and his captors did the trade-off here.

The roof scenes in season one were shot here.

And last but definitely not least... The famous CDC! This is actually the Cobb Center for Performing Arts. And no, the real CDC in Atlanta is not rigged to implode. Here's little me pointing in case you're lost on what's going on here. RIP people who suicided in the CDC.

If you ever happen to find yourself in Atlanta, the Walking Dead tours are definitely something you should check out. Especially if you're a fan of the show (dur). The creepy mood cannot be captured very well in photos but the feeling of living in the zombie apocalypse is very much present during the tour. Unfortunately, the tours do not feature actual zombies.
