The Porch (Midtown Sacramento): Brunch Edition
food: 4/5
experience: 3/5
overall: 3.5/5
Piggies seem to be a theme at the Porch for some reason. Mom said it was for "good luck." Are pigs good luck symbols? I don't think so. Anyway, they have them on the menus, inside, on the logo. Whether you can bring your pet pig onto the Porch's actual porch is undetermined.
This restaurant was a nice change from South. It's less crowded, there's actually service... oh yeah, and the food is better.
Pancakes: 4/5
Decent, they taste like pancakes. Not much to comment on here except they aren't very fluffy. They're sure big though. A side pancake took up the whole plate. You may not be able to tell but it's a big plate. They put powdered sugar on it which was a nice touch.
French toast: 5/5
Made with thick Brioche slices and soaked in batter (custard?). Dense but not too rich a la Tower French toast. And not overly sweet either. Dusted with powdered sugar which they seem to put on everything.
Beignets: 5/5
Aw, how cute, they're shaped like little piggies. Crisp with a nice doughy interior, as opposed to Iron Horse's versions. The thick doughy doughnut interior is the best part. Also dusted with powdered sugar, of course, and served with caramel sauce. (I think? It tasted different though. Maybe homemade)
Chicken & waffle: 3.5/5
These waffles seem to be kind of chewy. Not soggy necessarily, just soft. The flavor is alright but the texture I did not like. I would give them a 2/5. The chicken was perfect though. Evenly breaded, with a nice herb blend, and they gave several strips.
Biscuit & housemade jam: 5/5
A nice big biscuit. This is probably as close to Southern biscuits you'll get here in Sac. A little buttery but not overwhelmingly so. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Comes with housemade apricot strawberry preserves. Very good.
If you go to the Porch you gotta sit outside on the restaurant's namesake. People watching central and most of the passersby aren't actually homeless! Gasp. The inside is nice too though. Our waiter the first time here was Portuguese, from the same tiny island as our family, so we tipped him extra because we're probably related. The second time we came the service was not good though. It took a half hour to get our food, and when it came it was lukewarm. Service is majorly dependent on how busy they are.
