Hatchet Hall (Culver City)

food: 5/5
experience: 4/5
overall: 4.5/5

Hatchet Hall is supposedly a new take on Southern food. I don't see much Southern inspiration to be honest. It's a really cute place, though, and it does have a bit of a Southern vibe with the mismatched China plates, the stained-glass lamps inside and the wired chairs on the "patio". They serve mostly small plates and the combinations can be a bit esoteric. They are also home to a $115 prime-rib steak!

We started off with some simple potato yeast rolls. These may look innocent enough but they are to die for. They are crisp, and they taste very similar to King's Hawaiian rolls only even better. They're soft inside and they come with crystallized salt on top as well as really creamy butter. Unexpectedly fantastic.

I thought the potato rolls were good. I was not prepared for this majestic fish. They serve the whole sea bass, or branzino as it's also known. It was perfectly seasoned, with chiles, herbs, lemon, and other secret ingredients I could only guess at. Not too little, not too much, but beware, picking out the bones is like playing Minesweeper. You're bound to swallow one.

They had beef fat potatoes on their website I was eager to try but it turns out they literally just changed their menu the day we arrived so those were gone. Ugh! But my meal was still good. We would've liked it if we weren't relegated to the corner of the community table though, as there were small tables available. And for some reason you have to ask for ice in your water.

I'd recommend it if you want a fancy dinner at an under-the-radar restaurant with a unique menu. Not good for vegetarians.
