Shady Lady Saloon (Midtown Sacramento): Brunch Edition

food: 4/5
experience: 5/5
overall: 4.5/5

Hey guys waiting at Iron Horse Tavern. Did you know there's another awesome brunch spot literally right down the street that has very similar items but absolutely no wait time? Cos there is, and it's called the Shady Lady fuckin' Saloon. That's right boys and girls, an old-timey saloon right in the heart of midtown Sacramento.

Very chill vibes here on a weekend aftermorning. They have all the basics for brunch: omelets, pancakes, toast, waffles. Cocktails I can't tolerate sigh. But most of all, they have my favorite...

Chicken & waffles: 5/5
Yes, chicken and waffles, the match made in heaven, and they have it! It's not on their brunch menu but it's a special they always have. Theirs is fantabulous. The batter is so crisp and flaky that it falls right off the chicken. It looks like it's hand-breaded. The chicken is tender and moist. The waffle comes with powdered sugar and a dollop of freaking bomb-ass soft cinnamon honey butter. They make their waffles well, keeping them simple save for that butter oohh. That is some good stuff. Better than the pecan butter at Cafeteria/Iron Horse, even.

Buttermilk biscuits & gravy: 4/5
A decent side. The gravy is great for pouring on the chicken but otherwise it's pretty standard. Good but not fall-off-the-seat fantastic like the chicken & waffles. Same with the biscuits. They're pretty good but not a flavor-gasm.

Beignets: 4/5
As opposed to Iron Horse's on the corner, these are long rectangles and definitely smaller in portion size. They have a doughier interior and a heap of powdered sugar on top. Crisp and tasty but somehow not as good as Iron Horse's. Comes with delightful strawberry jam and icky orange marmalade (not a fan of marmalade).

Blueberry pancakes: 3.5/5
They also come in chocolate chip and strawberry. Chocolate chip is kinda pushing it into dessert territory so I went with the simple blueberry. These are decent. Nothing special. You can get a partial order which is sweet. Three bucks a cake.

French toast: 4/5
Again, decent, nothing out of the ordinary though. Made with cinnamon brioche toast. Also comes in a half order. Good deal.

I did sample one cocktail because, well, it was there, and I do miss alcohol. Just a simple lime mojito.

I've never had a mojito or gin before but this was delicious and very lime-y in flavor. Better than Mountain Dew or Sprite that's for sure. What can I say? If you know lime and like lime, you'll like their mojitos.
